What is the difference between standard rules and AI rules?
Standard rules in Missive operate based on simple pattern matching and fixed criteria:
- Sender email address contains a specific domain
- Subject line includes certain keywords
- Message was sent to a particular address
- Email has attachments
AI rules go beyond pattern matching to understand the actual content and context of emails:
- Detect the sentiment or tone of a message (urgent, angry, positive)
- Identify specific types of requests (refund, technical support, sales inquiry)
- Extract meaningful information (deadlines, project requirements, action items)
- Understand complex criteria that would be difficult to capture with keywords alone
While standard rules are excellent for straightforward automation based on email metadata or simple keywords, AI rules excel at understanding the nuance and meaning within the email content itself.
You can also combine both approaches in a single rule for maximum efficiency - use standard conditions as a first filter, then apply AI analysis only to emails that meet those initial criteria.
